Questions for Computer Science Majors.

I have a few Computer Science questions...?

  • What are some areas of Computer Science besides programming? I'm looking into a Computer Science major at UCLA. I work hard, i'm great at math, and great at physics and biology, but okay in Chemistry. I'm also good at writing and reading, but will that help me at all? Am I good enough to make a decent living with a major in Computer Science? Will I be able to get a job straight out of college? What kind of work should I expect? What minor is recommended along with Computer Science? Sorry about the sheer amount of questions. I'm curious and I want to make the right choice. Any answers/advice are appreciated. Thanks for reading :)

  • Answer:

Computer Science is mainly math based so no need to worry about chemistry. There are many topics in Computer Science that go way beyond just doing menial programming/debugging code, such as security, artificial intelligence, algorithms, graphics, user interface etc. A CS degree from UCLA would put you in a great position for getting a well paying job, as UCLA is a school well looked upon for CS. If you do well enough and get some internships, you will have a good chance of finding a job straight out of college.

Other answers

If you're great at math, physics, and biology, you might want to consider a major in those fields - any of them will use computer programming, and a knowledge of it will be very useful - but you'll get to do more than just write and debug code. Engineering, physics, astrophysics, biophysics, bioengineering, bioinformatics - these are all hot fields that combine all those subjects and can lead to research, development, patents, jobs at national labs or NASA, and working for universities as a professor and/or researcher.

You can go into networking instead of programming. You can get a job right out of school. You will make better than a decent living with computer science. A minor recommended would be another area of computer science, like programming. You can take networking and programming.
