What does it takes to be a forensics?

I'm thinking about a career in forensics. What would be my major?

  • I want to work with forensics. I'm into that figuring out blood samples or anything like that, helping with crime scenes and all. I wanted to know for college, what would be my major? I don't know what i should major in to get into that or a minor...i need helpp!

  • Answer:

Ignore people saying Psychology or Sociology. I'm a psychology major and I went to talk with the forensic science department students for fun and the people running the booth told me that it would be better to have chem or bio if you were interested in forensics, although they didn't know if it was a disqualifying factor or not. This was at a Tier 1 school. There IS forensic psychology but it is something different and some schools do offer Masters or Ph.D's in forensic psychology but I believe it's less common. There are all sorts of different specialized fields in forensics and with what you're talking about I would think about chem, but to be safe I would google the phone number of a forensic science program that you're planning on attending and finding out what they want.

Depends what sort of forensics you want to do. There is computer forensics, so you would need to do a computer major. There is financial forensics, so you would need to do an accounting major. There is forensic science i.e. lab work, so you will need to do forensic science major. There is audio visual forensics, so you would need to an audio visual major. There is forensic anthropology, so you would need to do anthropolgy There is forensic archaeology, so you would need to do archaeology and so on, and so on. I am doing BSc a UNE, with a double major in archaeology and palaeoanthropology, choosing as many forensic subjects as possible, so I will come out with the prospect of being a forensic archaeologist/anthropologist www.une.edu.au

My friend wanted to do forensic science so she started taking chemistry classes at her university but it was really overwhelming for her and now she is trying to be a baker!! I think she just majored in biology though.

If you want to work with blood samples and things similar to that Biology would be your best bet, unless you find a school that actually offers forensic science as a major.

Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology, Sociology, just generally lots of science courses.
