What is the difference between an Amplifier and a Speaker?

• So I'm looking into buying an amp with one 12" speaker. I would like to replace it with a EVM 12L speaker, but I'm confused about size. I understand that the DIAMETER of the speaker is the same but what about the depth? When I search ebay for this speaker I come up with results that look like different speakers but claim to be the same. Please help me understand whether or not these are the same speaker. The first one looks smaller depth-wise.

  You can get cone and voice coil replacement kits for EVM12L speakers to re-furbish them. It's unlikely a re-coned speaker will be quite as good as the original. There are lots of varieties of EVM12L by various manufacturers and most if them look like your first picture. I've not been able to find one similar to or as deep as the second picture. The power handling can vary for instance the EVM12L Black Shadow version for Mesa Boogie amps is rated at 200W 8Ω whereas the Zakk Wylde Black Label is 300W 16Ω (and twice the price).
