Is it better to completely drain my rechargeable batteries every time?

Can CR2032 batteries drain over time even when not in use?

  • If the batteries are just lying there does the charge go out of them after a few months/years? My brand new digital scale isn't turning on and I'm thinking that it's the batteries but they seem to have never been used they're just old.

  • Answer:

All "CR" cells are of the single-use (nonrechargeable) lithium type. They provide about 3 volts at low to moderate current levels. The numbers refer to their physical dimensions in millimeters, diameter first, then thickness, without a decimal point. The 2032 is 20mm diameter and 3.2mm thick. They have a very long shelf life, sometimes up to or more than 10 years, but, like any other type of cell, they can be defective when new or self-discharge over time due to imperfections of manufacture. If the cell was made in china, replace it on principle. Many electronic items come with an insulating strip that prevents battery drain before purchase. The strip must be pulled out to allow battery contact before the item will work. Check your scale to see if it has one.

Good CR2032 batteries last for ages at low current consumption. I've some PCs and add in cards that are best parrt of 10 years old and the CR2032s are still working.
