How to connect 2 portable ipod speakers together in one circuit?

I am trying to connect 2 identical portable speakers that used to be able to connect individually to an ipod. Each speaker has a L and R input and ran on 3 AAA batteries. I am trying to wire these together in one circuit using a 9.6V 1000mAh NiCd rechargeable battery. I have stripped all the incoming connections and wired them so that each wire shares a node with the complementary wire on the opposite speaker Since the speakers were running on 4.5V previously I set up a voltage divider consisting of 141.k and 12.5k to make Vout about 4.5 ish. I am testing the circuit wit ha 9V battery and the part that is confusing me is when i hook up the speakers the speakers do not play. I measured the voltage across the terminals and it says 1.23V(which was previosuly about 4.5). Is this from the Load resistance of the speakers? How to I go about wiring this correctly?

The d.c. resistnace of a 'speaker is very low. Connecting one across the lower R in your divider is effectively reducing that value to the 'speakers R, so the divider doesn't work as you think it should. A voltage divider is not the way to power those 'speakers anyway. You really need to supply 4.5V directly form a battery of three cells. You might get away with using a 6V battery. You could use the 9.6V battery and a 5V regulator i.c.
