Why are DVD-only copies of New Releases being released 2 weeks after BluRay-Only & BluRay/DVD Combos?
-
I am one who has been a collector of Movies/TV on DVD for 10 years now, have nearly 300 Movies or so on DVD, and for the past 10 years things have been good for me, when buying a movie on DVD (Especially New Releases that I have anticipation for home viewing release on DVD), but lately I have noticed that with each movie that gets newly released from Theatres (onto DVD, BluRay-Only, BluRay/DVD Combo, etc), the BluRay-Only, & BluRay/DVD Combo pack get a Release date 2 weeks before the DVD-Only release, meaning that I have to wait even longer just to get it on DVD only format, because I do not own a BluRay Player nor do I own any BluRay movies (and have no desire to own either one of them at all), I have been satisfied with the DVD format for over the last 10 years, but it's kind of frustrating seeing these BluRay-Only & BluRay/DVD Combo Packs being released weeks before the DVD-only release. I know I could buy the BluRay/DVD Combo pack to get the DVD, but then I have to pay more (almost double than I would for just the DVD-Only copy) because it's a combo pack that also includes the BluRay format, when all I want is the DVD only, and don't want to buy the BluRay format included with it. It just doesn't make any sense to me, that they can release a movie from theatres onto BluRay-Only, & BluRay/DVD Combo, which again obviously as you can see includes a DVD format version of it, but yet they wait 2 weeks more before releasing the DVD-Only copy of it, I mean it's clearly released onto DVD at the same time it's released onto BluRay, but for whatever reason the DVD part of it is not released by itself without the BluRay version included until 2 weeks after, and that's just really annoying and again frustrating to have to wait even longer after the initial Home-view release date than one typically has to wait just for the initial home-view release date. So if anyone can make sense of this for me and explain, that would be very appreciated, Thank You again for your patience and time.!

It's money. It costs more to have 3 sku's versus one (Blu ray plus DVD) or 2 (blu ray only) as time goes on, you will see support for DVD only release fall away. I also don't know where you get the double price from. combo pack blu ray/DVD new release movies that run let's say 24.99 are sometimes sitting right next to a DVD only version that's 19.99. Either way, the big premium that blu ray once commanded has eroded big time. I'm sure you know that this is coming, but why you are spending all this money on DVD really has me confused. I must admit that I've been a heavy renter since getting my first DVD player in 1998. I did buy some DVDs, but I never invested in store purchased DVD since HD TVs hit in 1999 and 2000 so I knew some kind of HD version was coming. I'm so glad I never purchased more that 40 or so DVDs in all the years till I got a BD player in 2008. Now we have blu ray, I rent a ton of them, and still only buy a few here and there. But the truth is, I've purchased blu rays for less than DVD (at times during the initial week) or at nearly the same price as DVD. On top of that, wal mart, bestbuy and target have more and more titles for around 8 bucks to 15 bucks, lots of big titles not just the bad joke-y B movies from years gone by. Even if you are viewing on a standard def TV, it's still better to buy blu ray if you are a serious movie collector since HDTVs are getting bigger, better and cheaper every year and blu ray players can be had for under 80 bucks, nothing compared to the money spent on your massive collection. If you enjoy buying new movies on new movie Tuesday, why not just go blu ray? The price during the initial week for major titles blu ray vs. DVD only are just 3 or 4 dollars apart when both are available, and in some cases about the same. After that first week, prices can spread apart further. Either way, ditch DVD.
