Can an M-Card from Comcast work if i buy a box off of ebay?
-
I am thinking of buying a Cable box --- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180469188087&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT --- and I noticed on a lot of the newer Motorola models, they have M-Card Slots on the back. Now I know the FCC requires for cable companies to supply 1 free cable card or M-card per household according to the existing plan. If i purchase the non activated box off of ebay, will it work if I obtain the M-Card and put it in the slot? If it does, will the DVR functions work?

Answer:
Likely not. Those aren't "opencable" devices which a cable provider must let you use with a cable card. Those are just a newer generation of the same boxes they use, which happen to use cable card (and are pre-paired at the office or at manufacture), rather have embedded security. You need a 3rd party CC device, such as a TiVo, for the provider's card to be useful.
