Need help with my guitar amp?

I need to buy a guitar amp, but I know NOTHING about guitars. Help?

  • I'd like to buy my on again/off again boyfriend a new guitar amp for Christmas, however, I know literally nothing about guitars/amps/ect. I know that right now he has an ibenez and an ltd (I think). I don't know what model or anything like that. He talks about wanting a mesa boogie amp? I'd like to get him a nice gift, without spending a fortune. I've looked on ebay and craigslist, but I have no idea what I'm looking for. I don't want to ask him too much about it because I think he'll get suspicious. Any guidelines on things or where to look for these items at a reasonable price would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    Not a good idea. Your best bet would be to get him a gift card form Guitar Center (if you have one) and then let him have a fun shopping day at the guitar store for Christmas. I can promise you that unless he has mentioned a specific amp you will get something he is not happy with.

That's really sweet of you to want to get him a gift he really wants, but I don't think it's a good idea. Unlike most other instruments, guitars are extremely technical - I've heard people easily talk about different models, amps, etc for about 20 minutes without running out of things to say. It's very easy to get him the entirely wrong thing, so unless you know a close friend of his who knows a lot about guitars and could guide you, I wouldn't go shopping for guitar stuff. Another thing: amps do not come cheap, even second hand ones may be out of your budget (especially since Mesa Boogie are advertised on their site as a company that hand builds custom amps, automatically making them more valuable).
