My HDMI cable won't work, please help?

Can this work? I bought a apple TV and a HDMI to VGA cable to connect the apple TV to my computer monitor.?

I have a really old TV that does´nt have HDMI and so I thought buying a HDMI to VGA cable would work in trying to connect the apple TV 2nd gen to my computer monitor. I tried it and nothing showed on the monitor. I first thought that maybe it did´nt work because I did a jailbreak for it before ever connecting it to a TV. But then I thought that maybe it´s the cable that I bought. What do you all think? And please, if you all are going to say anything about my monitors compatablilities, I have no idea nor do I have any idea on how to find out lol. so, some help please?

What cable did you buy and where did you buy it from? HDMI is digital whereas VGA is analog, so this would require some kind of converter device, not just a simple cable (if it's just some simple $5-10 cable, it's probably fake or something).
