Why do my subs make a buzzing sound?

Why does my guitar amp make a loud buzzing sound when I turn it on?

  • When I turn my guitar amp on it makes a very loud buzzing sound although nothing, not even a guitar cable, is plugged in. When I play my guitar the buzzing sound seems to disappear but it comes back once I start playing. What can be causing this? Is it an easy fix? HELP!!!

It's evident that there is a grounding issue. If it hums when you're not touching it, but stops humming when you touch it, then that shows that you are the ground point that makes the hum go away. Try grounding one of the amp's case screws to a ground point of your house, say a screw on an outlet plate or a copper water pipe. It could be the power outlet you're plugged into has lost its ground and isn't working like it should. A GFI tester (available from Home Depot for about 10 bucks) will show you if your outlet is wired correctly. Good Luck.

You didn't say what make (or model) your amp is. Most good amplifiers will have a grounding switch. Try that. If it's a tube-driven amplifier; check your tubes. Take each one, one at a time, out and inspect the pins for dirt and/or oxidation. Usually, re-seating the tubes in their sockets will take care of the humming issue. If not; chances are that the amp in question may have a loose connection internally and needs to be located and re-soldered. Feel free to e-me.

You set the pre-ampl gain too high. Cut it down to acceptable level.
