What do you use a Generator for?

What can I use to for an alternator/generator for a small turbine model?

  • I want to make a small sized model turbine but I'm not sure what i can use to produce electricity that is cheap. I know you can make a dc motor produce electricity but I'm not sure how. I want to keep cost down and the alternator/generator needs fit the scale of the turbine which only stands 1 foot tall? Thank you for your responses!

  • Answer:

A DC motor is probably your best bet. You just need a diode added, to prevent the battery driving the motor.

Well you can go and buy a DC generator. An AC generator produces a lot more current but costs a lot more. You can also probably easily find a DC generator schematic off the internet (They really aren't that hard to make). AC generator would be tricky though...

Try picking up a refurbished car alternator from an auto store. Should be around $35. Most are belt-driven though, so make sure you can fit your turbine with a pulley.
