DVD Player with Up-conversion - Cable Question?
-
I just bought a new DVD player with up-conversion (Sony DVP-NS710H/B). It only came with a composite cable (red, white, yellow), so I set it up with that for now. The picture isn't any better, but I had already read that you need to use the HDMI cable to get the upconverted picture, so that doesn't really concern me yet. However, there's this terrible buzzing sound in the background. I tried it with two different DVDs (one brand new straight from the store, the other a copied disc that's always worked fine) and there wasn't any difference. The buzzing is even in the background when the DVD is stopped and the player's default screen is on. I also tried it with the cable from the box and the one that I used on my old DVD player, and there was no difference. This player has gotten really good reviews, so I wasn't expecting an issue. Is it possible (likely?) that the noise is due to the composite cable and would be fixed with an HDMI cable? I was planning to get one anyway, but if I'm probably going to have to return the player, I'd rather wait on the cable since they're so pricey. I just thought I'd see if this was a common problem first. Thanks!

It's possible that the buzzing is from the composite cable, but most likely it's a damaged player or a bad setting in the audio setup menu. Go into the DVD player setup menu and check the audio settings. The stereo composite cables (red+white) should deliver decent sound to your TV. By the way - HDMI cables don't have to cost an arm and a leg. Amazon has some for about $5 (Amazon Basics Brand).
As you have tried different cables, the problem is unlikely to be cables. Take the player back to the shop and ask them to connect it to a TV with the supplied cable. If OK then your TV may be the problem. The fact that something has a good review has nothing to do with an individual faulty product. All it indicates is that the item reviewed was not faulty at that time!
