Why am I not able to text my friends who have the itouch?

I have an iphone 3.0 and some of my friends have an itouch. They must have a free text app or something, i can receive the text they send me but every time i try to text back it comes back with an error message saying I need to put a 2 digit code located in front of there message in front of my message but there is never a code there. I use to be able to text them with no problem but all of a sudden this happened. Also i receive the texts on my text message thing if that matters. Please and thank you
