Why won't my computer speakers work on my TV?

  • I'm trying to get a set of computer speakers (with sub) to work with my flat screen TV. I've never had a problem doing this with other TVs but on the Sharp in my living room, they don't seem to work. In the past, I've plugged the 1/8" cable into the headphone jack of the TV and they started working right away. This TV doesn't have a headphone jack, per-say, but there is an 1/8 jack on the back of the TV that says "audio". When I plug the speakers in, they do not bypass the normal audio speakers on the TV. Any idea what's going wrong here?

    I very much doubt your TV would have no headphone socket. But if it's a new model, don't you have a user manual, or can't you look it up on the net ? You are right that when you find the headphone socket, plugging in headphones or an external sound system will disconnect the TV speaker. It is usual for a headphone socket to have a small headphone symbol near it. I think you just need to do a bit more homework here - have a good look all round the TV and google that model for user instructions.

that audio port might be for audio input, not output. theres not enough info here to find out exactly what the problem is. It's possible you may need to change settings on the tv if it doesn't automatically change itself.

When all else fails, read the instruction manual. It will tell you what the connections on the set are for.

The audio jack you are plugging into is probably not designed with a set of break contacts to disconnect the internal speakers. Also go into setup and audio and see what kind of options you find there.
