HDMI for dummies. Literally, how do you use an HDMI cable to hook up a laptop to a HDtv? ?r=1247876487?

I have the HDMI cable, my laoptop has an HDMI port as does my HDtv; however, when I connect the tv to the laptop using the cable and switch my tv from the ""tv" setting to "HDMI" setting it says no signal. What am I not doing right?

you may need to use the switch (usually on the f4 key and usually w/ the blue fct key) which looks like 2 monitors to switch from laptop to external to clone...
