Why does my hdtv turn on then and then turn off?

Is it safe to turn the power strip "off" for my hdtv and PS3 to save power?

  • I've heard of "vampire" energy, and figure it's probably on stuff like my hdtv and dvds and PS3 and cell and other chargers. So i've got power strips that i turn the power strip "off" to save power on my electric bill. I'm concerned it will damage the electronics by doing this. And fairly sure there will be an argument with my husband. I've already been putting the power strips "Off" and restarting when I want to watch TV and stuff. It seems fine, no problem. But over the "long term" is this a bad thing to do? Also can you tell me if i hit the power strip off; will my cell phone retain it's charge. Or do i have to unplug it completely and turn it off. Thanks so much. My power bill is through the roof. I have to be very thrifty and also want to be "greener"

  • Answer:

no, the point of a surge protector is to prevent power surges,if you turn the protector off it is just like any other outlet and won't protect your stuff from surges. Try unplugging them instead

I'm pretty sure it's safe. Although, what I would do to take extra precautions (because I'm rabid about the safety of my game systems, haha) is unplug the PS3 and television. That way, you're guaranteed to not have damage. Hope this helps! :)

You CAN turn it off, the neutral connection is still intact. It will still function as a surge protector. You will not damage electronics by turning them off at the protector. Your cell phone will lose a charge if it is left on and not plugged into a power source. I have attached a link to a device that you can measure how much electricity you are using when a device is "off". There are cheaper alternatives, I just posted something to get you looking if you are interested.
