How good is Solar Power Invertor?

I hav generator and invertor in my home, can i use generator power(a.c) 2 charge my invertor battery?

  • Answer:

If you charge the invertor battery, the invertor has to not be running. The invertor is designed to get 12.6 volts from its battery. The charger has to provide 15 volts or more to charge the battery. This could cause the output of the invertor to go from 120 vac to 160 vac. If the invertor is of the UPS variety, it should have a charger built-in to keep its battery at full charge when AC is available. The charger shuts off when the AC fails and the invertor is switched on automatically.

Not very good description of the setup so let me make sure I have it right. The inverter/ battery combo has a common 12V battery like a car battery. To use the generator to charge the battery you would need to convert your 120v/ 220V AC to 12V DC. Just a normal car battery charger. So yes you can use the generator but not directly. Sounds like you live in a place with occasional bad weather. Maybe the MID-West? Having both actually makes good sense. The generator probably produces more power than you need most of the time it is running. Use it to charge some storage batteries and then turn it off for when your power use is low like at night.

Only if your generator has a DC hookup. Otherwise it will kill your batteries. Why use the inverter if you have a generator?
