New York Housing Authority Fraud?

  • I am a resident of New York Housing Authority and my rents were overcharged by my housing manager. I went to the management office and asked her(the manager) for the breakdown of my rent, but she refused and told me to leave. I don't know what I can do now since I am powerless and poor. What should I do? Should I get a lawyer and file a lawsuit against my manager?

    You can go to your Community Board and report this. Most Community Boards in NYC have a housing committee. Call 311 to find location of your community board and the phone number. You can contact your council member. Each council member has an aide that specializes in housing issues. I'd try the council member's office first since council members have some power and influence. Find a housing associatoin such as GOLES (it's good ole lower east side). They provide counselling and help to NYCHA residents and other people with housing issues. If you don't live in GOLES area of services they can recommend an agency near you. Hope this helps. NYCHA staff needs to be retrained to treat NYCHA residents with basic respect.

You may be poor, but you don't sound "powerless"! If you feel that you have been cheated by your resident manager - you can report this to your New York Housing Authority - I'm sure you can find their telephone number in the yellow pages - if you want to you can ask for help at "legal Aid".
