How can I find out who lived in my house before me?

My grandma told me that she had seen something, like a girl in a white dress walk through a hallway in her house. I told her that I would go online and try to find out who lived in the house before her. She said that the house that used to be on this land burned down. So I was wondering if any of you knew a website where I can search this homes history for free. I live in the U.S.A.
