How do I get my first job?

How would I get my first job and apartment out of state?

  • K, well, my story is I'm 18 years old and I graduate from high school in less than 3 months, on June 2. I have plans to go to community college for the first year before transferring to a 4-year school to get my bachelor's degree. I plan to major in Journalism but out here in Maryland, they don't have too many community colleges that have that major. I did some research and I found that they have more community colleges in other states that do. But I also found that most community colleges don't provide housing and most community college students either have their own place or live at home. Being as I'll be out of state, I'll have to get my own place, most likely an apartment, that's what I want, because rooming just ain't my style, so I can go to the local community college and get my credits to transfer. I'm not really worried about transportation because I'm cool with the bus or train. So, my question is, how would I get my own place, and more importantly, how would I get my own job to pay for my own place out of state? Thanks in advance for your answers. A job that has little or no training, or short-term on the job training would be great. If it helps, I'll have a high school diploma and I'm good with typing, organization, I can be really professional too.

Here is your totally practical answer. Stay at home and take your first 2 years at a local junior college. It does not matter about Journalism because all you want to do is to knock off all of the general studies classes in an inexpensive manner. While you are going to school and, working part time, you need to be very disciplined about saving money for your last 2 years at a college with a good Journalism program. You can then utilize their dorm living and get a degree from a good college at about 40% of what you are proposing to do. You can look at Maryland colleges which will give you a good in-state tuition rate or you can look at nearby states where you'll pay out-of-state tuition. William & Mary and The University of Virginia would both be good schools for Journalism. If you decide on a college early on you can make sure everything you take at the community college will transfer. See your community college counselor right away and tell him/her your plans so they can work with you.

You have not said what kind of job you may be looking for. I got an out of state job by first knowing what I wanted to do and where I wanted to be. Once I determined that I sent out resumes and followed up within a week with a phone call. As far as a place to live the colleges usually have many good leads for off campus rentals. Go online and check the classifieds in the newspapers of the city where you intend to be. This can be helpful for both a job and a rental. Check with realtors. They'll want an adult to cosign for everything. Your parents will most likely be the ones to do it but an elder sibling, grandparent, aunt, etc. would be ok too.
