How much can a starting teacher spend on rent?

How much can a starting teacher spend on rent?

  • I am currently living in Charlotte, NC and have an apartment, but I am looking to move when my lease is up to be in the city. I am starting a job as a teacher and I am now in the process of trying to figure out how much I can afford to spend a month on rent. I am well aware of utilities, internet, cable, etc. but if my annual salary is at 33k, how much can I spend a month on rent? I just can't figure out how much they take out of my paycheck for taxes or whatever. Any help would be suggested!! I am going to guess I will be bringing home about 3k a month. if the salary is 33k and i get paid 10 months I estimate about 3k a month or would it be less??

  • Answer:

You may be able to have them pro rate your pay so you get some in the summer. It is hard to adjust to no money for 2 months. Normally you can pay 26% of your gross salary in rent or mortgage. about $800...no more than 36% for all recurring charges, car, insurance, etc. Good luck.

Figure 30% for taxes. That leaves you 23,000 in take home pay. No more then 1/3 for rent 650 a month in rent. Your 3k a month forgets Federal Taxes, SS, Medicare, State taxes, Union Dues, Medical Insurance. You must base your annual salary on 12 months since you pay bills 12 months a year. Hopefully you are not a math teacher.

Why don't you see if you can extend your lease until you have brought home a paycheck and then you will know how much you have to spend!
