Pay water bill after we moved out?
-
I recently moved out of a rental home that I occupied with my husband for three years. We were responsible for paying our quarterly water bills which we paid on time for three years and it never once exceeded $66 for 3 months. We moved out mid July and the water meter wasn't read until mid August. Our landlord agreed that he would pro-rate the last month's bill so we wouldn't pay for the last month we weren't there. However, when we got the bill, it was $280!! Apparently, the workers who came to paint or clean the carpet must have left the water running during this last month and increased our water bill. We should not be responsible to pay for this water usage since it must have occurred after we moved out (when we handed over the keys, no water was running). One would expect our water usage during the last 2 months to be the same as it was for the entire 3 years we were living there. However, the landlord is requiring that we pay this huge bill and has deducted it from our security deposit refund. What can we do? We were expecting to pay approx. $45, not $280!!! This is in Baltimore City Maryland. Thank you.

Answer:
All you can do is sue him in small claims for the 280 dollars. If you moved out you shouldn't have to pay.

Lesson Learned: ALWAYS get final reading on utility bills at time of vacating premises, end of lease. Probably not a whole lot you can do unless you're will to go to court over it. Verify the reading with water company, as it could be misread of meter. You created the problem by NOT getting final reading, final bill, which any utility will do upon request. You don't have to wait for quarterly bill.
