Paying for a 12 month lease, only staying 11 and 1/4?
-
So I have a lease for the fall where I move in August 20th and move out July 31st of 2012. I am paying for the full month of August but am only staying about a week. I asked if i can move in early and they said I might be able to with a 100 dollar early move in fee. Is this legal?

Answer:
sounds like two questions in one combined explanation....#1 you should not expect any refund from your current leassor just because you left 3 weeks shy of the full lease term. (it is proper to pay the full rent agreed upon, even if you leave early) #2 if you have agreed on a new lease elsewhere, and you now want to move in early, most agents will pro-rate the rent for a partial month of occupany before or after the contract terms agreed upon. Usually by weeks, for example 2 of 4 weeks would be 1/2 of a normal month's rent.

as far as an early move-in fee is concerned, what's legal is whatever you agree to.
