Can i get housing benefits when i have another property with a mortgage?

  • I split up from my ex and was left with a mortgage and 3 children. i couldnt keep up payments so gave my keys bk to mortgage lender. i then moved into another house and claimed housing benefit which i got and still get but now ive spoke to mortgage lender they have give me my keys bk because mortgage paid upto nxt month. can i rent my house out to my dad as he has no were to live and can he claim housing benefit on my mortgage home and i still get housing benefit on this home. my dad cant work he is disabled. i will work as soon as i can get a job. dont reply to this if your gonna leave nasty comments. thanks

    Unfortunately, you can't get housing benefit if you have your own property. HOWEVER, if you *legitimately* rent out your existing property to your dad, he may be able to claim housing benefit. You could them use that rent to pay for your own accommodation - thus continuing to own your home.

in addition to the excellent advice of the masked landlord, have you spoken to the mortgage company? Giving the keys back never works, but they would rather you keep paying something as otherwise the repossession may give them a loss. Like all debts, it doesn't go away but it can be slowed down while you sort yourself out. also make sure the ex is paying his way. Or is he the one paying the mortgage? good luck.

so if your mortage is paid up until next month after that you know youll be able to get housing benefit again right? so its only one month so keep quiet and if they ever find out its only one months housing benefit so dont worry about it, youre not living there so youre being truthful in your claim, also if your dad pays you rent for this month that your mortage is paid for then save that as u can pay it back if you need too hope this helps

just keep it quiet and carry on what your doing and your dad apply for the benefits, what they don't know won't hurt them, why be honest about everything when your going to cut your throat doing it and have 3 kids to look after to.
