How to work as a Real Estate agent and a full time job at the same time?

Most of the people around me have a real estate agent license and they all use it as a side job with a full time job on hand, but I haven't seen them done anything like selling houses. My mom also told me to get a license so I can use it as a back up in case i got laid off. So my question is if I keep my full time job now, how do I start on going to RE industry after getting the license? What does it mean that I have to work under an associate, is it going to be full time as well? I'm in California, btw.

Why only real estate agent . you can try and work on any thing if you want? Many of my friends did the something similar.. they were interested in making money - so with their job they also did online tradaing.. to get some cash in their life.
