How Do I Apply For Tax exemption?

Property Tax Exemption for Veterans. How does it work?

  • I have never owned a house before and I am trying to figure out what a Property Tax Exemption means. I am a eligible veteran for my state of Connecticut. I know it differs per state but when they say tax exemption, what does it really mean. I found out that Connecticut gives a $1,500 exemption for property tax purposes. A house im looking at has taxes of 4900 per year. This doesnt mean I get $1500 off my taxes does it? Personally, I think thatd be great but I have a feeling the government wouldnt be that nice to veterans and give them that big a break. Can someone explain it to me? Thank you

  • Answer:

contact the CT dept of revenue - it probably means you get a rebate on your state income taxes for $1500 - you would still have to pay the full $4900 property taxes when they are due
