What is the hourly pay at "The Children's Place?

Do you still have to pay electricity for a place you are renting but not living in?

  • I live in a 4 bedroom apartment and each room is leased independently by the complex. The tenants are responsible for paying the electricity. When the 4 of us moved in we decided that we would split the electricity cost evenly among ourselves. Two of the girls moved in January but did not break their lease so they are still renting the rooms. We have had horrible ice storms this year and it has cost around $350/month to keep the temp around 68 deg. They are refusing to pay the electricity since they are not living in the space they are renting. But since their rooms are connected to the apartment we don't have a choice but to heat them and it takes twice the amount of energy to heat twice the space. It would be different if they broke their lease so someone else could move in. Also they claim they are not living here but one girl had a party here and did not shut the back door and it blew open for a good part of the day (during the middle of winter). Both of them have come in and out of the apartment to move their things which involves opening and closing the door several times which causes all of our heat to move outside. I do not have the money to pay their portions of the electricity as I have to pay tuition, rent, and my own electricity. I don't know what to do at this point. If I pay their electricity I can't pay my rent and if I don't pay electricity it will get shut off. Together they owe me around $400, which is about one month's rent for me. I have contacted the apartment complex and they will not doing anything.

  • Answer:

Who else is going to pay it? It must be left on there will be problems in the pipes etc. As long as your name is on the lease - you pay.

You have to sue them in small claims court for their share of the electricity and you will win. Meanwhile, you do have to pay the whole bill if the utility is in your name. They legally have to pay their share if they are still paying rent. Why would you contact the management? They have nothing to do with this unless the electric is in their name. Do you mean two of your roommates have been paying rent for February and March and they dont live there?
