What is an appropriate amount of rent money?
-
I'm 18 and am starting college in the fall. The school I'm going to does not guarantee housing- it's basically pot luck. I don't want to have to deal with that anxiety every year so I'm hoping to get an apartment once I start & make some friends to get one with. The school is about 4 hours away from where I live. As of right now I live at home with my parents. I never paid rent before. For my first year (or semester depending on when I can get my own apartment) my brother & sister-in-law are letting me move in with them. They're 28- ten years older than me and both working professional jobs. My brother is kind of in his own little world lol he works and makes money but my sister in law actually handles all their finances. So I want to pay them rent because I would not feel right living there rent free, it's nice enough that they're letting me stay. I asked my sister-in-law how much she would need from me a month. But she's really sweet and keeps telling me she doesn't want to take any money from me (she's really more like a big sister to me than a sister-in-law she's such a nice person & she's a high school teacher- one of those who really loves young people and wants to help them in any way she can). I'm really touched but I still want to pay rent but I have no idea how much a month. I tried googling it- it said $300? is that an ok amount? Or should I be paying more? Thanks.

i am new in delhi i have no idea about what a rent money in delhi.my new friends tell me south delhi rent cost more than other area. i offered only rupees 5000 monthly including electricity and water supply bills.
$300 is perfect. I rented a room in a house before and paid $450 a month including cooking, internet, utilities, access to laundry, driveway parking, etc. I've also tried living rent-free with family members (older cousins) before and it didn't work quite well. They are as sweet as your sister-in-law and I like them very much. We were on good terms and still are but there was always this tension when I was around them. Maybe it was just me since I knew someone was responsible for all my expenses while I was living there. They had to make ends meet themselves so I felt guilty for taking advantage of their kindness and most of the time I felt like a free loader. You will probably have to live there without paying rent for the first couple months. In the same time try to get a job then suggest them to take some money from you every month. If she refuses again just tell her that with $300 she can help buy the food and cook for you since you won't have time to shop and cook for yourself. She will appreciate your cleverness and respect you more. To be honest, I think $300 is actually a good deal because at that price you'll be able to live with people you know. And you can't put a price on your safety!
i live in southern ca and i think 300 is perfect
It really depends on the location. Here in Southern California I would Say $500 - $600 is pretty decent but in other parts of California you can manage $300 with no problems. You should definetly help them out in whatever you can if you cant afford pay more thats what is standard. Look on local craiglist under housing to see rents for rooms around the neighborhood
