How do I rent an apartment in NYC without a guarantor?

Can I rent an apartment (with my parents co-signing) in NYC?

  • I'm 17. I applied to the college of my choice to late! I was going to study acting anyway, so I've been wondering: can I just go to NYC, get a job, rent an apartment(with my parents co-signing?) and send myself through the Stella Adler Conservatory? Could I do that?

  • Answer:

Actually no. Your name cannot go on the lease since you are a minor. If your parents sign the lease they are expected to reside there as the primary residence. NYC rental laws are very strict. Besides can you afford 1500 to 2000 rent plus utilities.

Other answers

You are considered a minor. meaning you can not enter a legal binding contract (such as a lease). so your parents can be the main people on the lease and than sign you on. good luck.
