Ordering Checks - Savings / Checking Account Number at a Credit Union?
-
Hey party people! So I dumped the corporate pigs (almost) at Wells Fargo in exchange for the local credit union. I'm trying to order checks through an online seller and, obviously, they need to know my checking account number. At this credit union, my checking and savings accounts both have the same number...lets hypothetically say its 0000123456. The checking account is then refereed to as Share 01, and the savings account is Share 10. It seems it would get confusing to my credit union if they got a check for account 0000123456...especially if I had two checking accounts with them... My question is, what the hell do I tell the check manufacturer what my checking account number is? Do I just put the hypothetical 0000123456? Or would I include that Share ID number....000012345601? Apparently, this numbering system is common at credit unions, so hopefully someone with more experience knows the ropes! Thanks...you rock!

Answer:
Buy the first box of checks through your CU. You'll notice the checking account number to the right of the routing number. Here's something better than buying checks through a 3rd party printer: getting checks for free. Many CUs, including mine, will offer free boxes of checks for maintaining a balance, doing direct deposit, having a loan with them, or a combo of any or all of them. Granted, you'll only get one design to choose from, but they're only checks.

Ask the credit union which numbers to use. They won't bite you for not ordering checks from them--you're not the first to try to save money!
you can call any of the check companies and they usually know what you need to do. If that doesn't work, call your credit union and ask what number has to be on your check. They are familiar with people that don't want to pay their prices for their checks. That's the only way to be sure.
