I want to get a job, how old do I need to be for a bank account?

I know jobs pay you with cheques, so I need a bank account to cash them. How old do I need to be to open a bank account myself? (i'm 17). Also, I've heard that you don't need to be as old for a savings account as a chequing account, what's the difference between them? With a savings do I still get a debit card to pay with?
