How to motivate my boyfriend of over a year to save money?

  • I want to help motivate my boyfriend to save money because he keeps talkin bout saving money for a brush guard on his truck so deer can't total it.. But when I tell him its a good idea he says he would but its hard for him to save it. He's used to spending it on whatever he wants whenever he wants. How do I help him out so he can get the brush guard? Please don't give stupid comments like "sleep with him and have him pay you and save the money he gives you" I will report dumb comments like that. Appropiate answers are greatly appreciated. I don't want to change him I'm just looking for ideas to help motivate him to save money.

    If you ask me, a deer can and will do some big damage no matter what protection you have on your vehicle. Better just get good insurance that will fix whatever gets damaged. I suspect he made the comment to you about saving for something specific but that he hadn't thought it through, maybe he has thought it thru now but just has not updated you. There is no way you (or anyone) can make another person do what we think is right or what we think they should do. They will do it only when they feel the need to.

I am sorry, but I have to say that this seems like a passive-aggressive way of getting you to buy the brush guard for him without coming out and asking you for the money. It's hard to make somebody do something they don't want to do. If he wants to do it, but doesn't have the will power, you can tell him that he should pay himself first. Say that from now on, the first thing he will do is put 10 percent of each check into a savings account and that he will have to budget to live on the rest. It would be ideal if his employer could take a savings deduction out of his paycheck for him, but few do that anymore. If he is not interested in doing it, I think you are out of luck.
