Young adult trying to get credit card with no credit?

I'll be going into my junior year in college now. I checking/debit account and have invested into a mutual fund just recently. But I'm interested in building credit and I've heard it's very hard for someone to get a credit card who hasn't already gotten one while in college if they don't have any credit. I tried applying at capitalone.com for a "limited credit" credit card and got denied because I didn't have enough credit. I've applied for a mastercard and I'm still waiting to hear back about that one. What can I do to get a credit card with no credit? Does anyone have a suggestion of a specific card that would be a good bet for me to be able to get? I've heard that getting a gas station or department store card might be a good route if I can't get accepted for a real credit card. But neither are ideal at all because I don't shop at any one store enough to really be able to use a credit card every month and I get gas at many different gas stations.
