Can I get housing benefit if I have a mortgage?

Can someone on housing benefit get a mortgage?

  • My friend has asked me if someone on on HB can get a mortgage, shes finding it hard to find a place to live and thinks getting a mortgage will help, so i was wondering if any of you knew if she could?

  • Answer:

just wondered -if she can't afford to pay her rent, how is she going to afford a mortgage, She will off course have to have a decent deposit to buy a property, and enough money to pay all the legal fees and surveys etc

What? Of course she can't! How would she pay it? You have to have an income and enough savings for a deposit in order to get a mortgage.

No, because housing benefit is only paid to people who are renting and not to homeowners, and she'd be a homeowner if she had a mortgage.

NO and the council will NOT pay a mortgage

HOW, you've got to be something like 3 months in arrears with your mortgage for HB to even make interest payments! even if she got an interest only mortgage, @ 6% on a £100k starter home say £115.00 pcm it's more than the housing allocation for a single person of about £92.50 pw, then you've got blp etc.

Probably not.
