Money and banking question?

Banking question, if it didn't scan my check, how did it take the money out?

  • Okay, I went to Bank of America's ATM machine thing (Not really an ATM, I guess, since you can deposit checks and cash and withdraw and check balance), and I deposited my check from work. A little message came on saying that it couldn't scan the check, and to manually enter the amount. I entered the right amount, but if it didn't scan, why would it even let me do that? Wouldn't it be easy for someone to punch in an amount higher than the actual check? Could someone do that? I mean, I'm kind of a karma-believer, and I wouldn't feel right stealing, but there's no doubt other people would be just fine with putting in a different amount and getting a bit more money! I'm just a little confused, and if anyone knows the answer, that would be great!

  • Answer:

You could punch in a different amount, yes. And then the next day, when they take the checks out of the machine and compare the amounts on the check with the amounts punched in to the keypad, they'll see the difference and they'll know you were trying to commit fraud. Banks don't work on the honor system. They verify everything.

If you were to write in the wrong amount, they'd deduct the extra money from your account after they looked at the deposit slip. In most banks, they won't even credit the deposit until the check clears, so you wouldn't have access to the money right away, so even if you wrote the wrong amount, it wouldn't matter.
