CA Unemployment - What if you do some temporary part time work?
-
I am collecting Unemployment in California. I know someone who needs some temporary part time work done for a couple of weeks. How does this affect my benefits? I found it on the EDD website but I still didn't understand it. I am receiving the full $475 ($450 + $25 stimulus) per week. If I earn $50 in a week, what will my UI Check be? If I earn $300 in a week, what will my UI Check be? If I earn $475 (or more) will I get anything? Also, if this company I might get part time temp work for pays mileage, how do I figure that into it? If I work as an IC, taxes will not be taken out - will UI allow me to deduct the taxes when considering what amount they will pay me for that week?

Answer:
If you work off and on while collecting CA UI, every two weeks you will get a form where you have to declare how much you got or will get ($s) for each of those last two weeks. And then the equal number of $$s will be deducted from your next Unemployment Insurance check. But that will keep your whole Unemployment Insurance claim from running out as soon. For example, if you earned $300 one week, your unemployment check for that week would be lowered to $175. If you earned $475 one week, you wouldn't need an unemployment check for that week. Bummer, you say, it's not worth it to even try to work. But the reward side is more long-term. If originally, your unemployment insurance claim was due to be exhausted in 26 weeks, this would stretch it out into a 28th, 29th or 30th week before it would be exhausted. You will get it in the end ---and probably when you need it all the more. That is the general concept of CA UI. They may have refinements sometimes where they only take $1 out for each $2 (or $3), but the above is the overall general concept. As to your last question, you have to declare your gross income (before taxes) all the way through, so net income (after taxes) does not really ever come into play. That's my experience of it...
