1934A five dollar silver certificate?
-
is there any value beyond $5?
-
Answer:
As currency, it is only worth $5.00. The ability to exchange the Certificate for silver no longer exists. A collector would need to know three things to determine how much he would be willing to pay. (1) Is it a North Africa emergency issue? You can recognize these Certificates because they have a yellow seal. (2) What is the grade of the Certificate? You can estimate the grade using the guide at http://www.thecurrencyhouse.com/gradenotes.html (3) Does the serial number include a star? If it is not a North Africa Emergency issue and the serial number does not contain a star a collector would expect to pay about $15 for a Certificate graded fine $30 for a Certificate graded extremely fine $60 for a Certificate graded Choice Crisp Uncirculated (63) $75 for a Certificate graded GEM Crisp Uncirculated (65) If it is not a North Africa Emergency issue and the serial number does contain a star a collector would expect to pay about $40 for a Certificate graded fine $60 for a Certificate graded extremely fine $250 for a Certificate graded Choice Crisp Uncirculated (63) $500 for a Certificate graded GEM Crisp Uncirculated (65) If it is a North Africa Emergency issue and the serial number does not contain a star a collector would expect to pay about $65 for a Certificate graded fine $125 for a Certificate graded extremely fine $275 for a Certificate graded Choice Crisp Uncirculated (63) $450 for a Certificate graded GEM Crisp Uncirculated (65) If it is a North Africa Emergency issue and the serial number does contain a star a collector would expect to pay about $325 for a Certificate graded fine $650 for a Certificate graded extremely fine $3000 for a Certificate graded Choice Crisp Uncirculated (63) $5000 for a Certificate graded GEM Crisp Uncirculated (65) Of course, if you sell it do a dealer it is unlikely he will pay that much since he has to make a profit when it sells it.

Ebay says... yes. Depending on condition, it looks like it is worth between $15 and $100.

Condition is everything - is it crisp & un-circulated?? What is the issuing bank?? Anywhere from $25 to several hundred.
