How can I become an insurance broker?
-
i'm graduating college this summer with a degree in International Studies. I am fluent in Korean, with 4 years of instruction in Spanish, 2 years in French and using Rosetta Stone to brush up on all three while beginning Mandarin. I am a self-starter with great work/life ethics and understand the invaluable importance of culture and the social dynamics of everyday life. I am also a very independent person which is why i'd like to work my way up to working for myself and maximizing my production for my own benefit rather than working set amount of hours for a salary. I have worked 2 years in the memberships/sales department of my school's recreational gym From what i've read online, it seems I should get my license and start working for a broad company, gaining exposure to the insurance world in general and find my niche or area of interest in insurance then to become an insurance broker. i'm wondering if that's the correct path to start in order to become an insurance broker. i'm also wondering how long it takes to obtain my insurance license, how long I should work at the company before opening up my own brokerage business and about how many years before i can work comfortably raking in premiums from renewals and living the good life. i'm wondering what type of positions are there for me to work for in an insurance company straight out of college?? thanks in advance and much appreciated.

Answer:
I was a marketing rep for some large property casualty companies. You sound good. I'd interview with a multi line company that offers training in marketing, claims or underwriting as those areas will provide you with a background for coverages and rating the two factors most that are important in selling. They will also pay for courses like CPCU and CLU which will increase your knowledge. The license is no big deal you can get it at anytime just so you have it before you're binding coverage. You wont be able to open your own brokerage business you'll need to work for another broker and then see how it goes either by buying in or then after your experienced starting your own. Think 5 years more or less then 5 to 10 getting accounts then adding as you go. I retired at 56 after about 21 years of being an agent...had been with the companies about 6 years before joining an agency

You don't say where you live but if you are in the USA I would contact a Company like State Farm Ins as they have a good trainee program where you get paid while training and studying for your license exams.
The first step, is to get your license. It's probably going to make sense, as a second step, to work for a local broker, who can teach you how the business works, and then you can figure out if you can sell or not. Usually, you need to bust butt 5 - 10 years, at least, before you can sit back and rake in renewals . . . for the property/casualty line. Continuing commissions aren't so hot for life/health, so you have to work hard forever. If you work for an insurance company, you get paid salary. You don't get the big bucks, unless you take the big chances - working straight commission.
