What are my options for my insurance?

What are my options? Should I claim for Insurance?

  • What are my options? Should I claim for Insurance? Today there was a big strom in NYC. Due to this, a tree branch fall on my car and broke rear window of Honda Accord. There is also small damage in side metal near the glass. But is is very small. It was parked in driveway of a house (paid parking). What are my options? My insurance has Comprehensive $1,000 Deductable and Collision $1,000 Dedtable. Would I better of not reporting this to insurance and repair it by myself? Is the city going to pay for it? Should I claim for the incurance? I had called 311 to report it. I was on hold for over 15 minutes and my AT&T cell phone was disconnecting. Even making a police report was difficult today. I understand they are busy today.

I seriously doubt if the city would cover anything for tree damage. Sometimes glass breakage is different from normal comprehensive deductible, so you might check your policy about that. Other than that, get an estimate to repair the damage and see how that compares to your deductible.

City not liable as the storm caused branch to fall. Get an estimate to see how much it would cost to repair damage and see if it exceeds your Comprehensive deductible (falling objects covered under Comprehensive).

First thing is to understand that when you take a $1,000 deductible you are assuming some risk in return for a lower premium. In this case the bet went against you. So what to do? I would go to a couple of glass shops and body shops to get estimates of what it is going to cost to replace the rear window and repair the body damage. If the total is less than $1,000 then the cost to repair and replace comes out of your checkbook. If you do have to pay you might check with a salvage yard to get a used rear window. If the cost is more than $1,000 than you have to decide if you want to present a claim for the amount over $1,000. You might want to discuss it with your agent.
