Best insurance supplement to medicare in Calif?

Does anyone have a GOOD Medicare Supplement Insurance?

  • When I turn 65 I will be on Medicare. What is a GOOD supplemental health and drug insurance to take care of the bills and drugs that Medicare won't cover? If you could include the price per month, I'd really appreciate it. Thanking you in advance!!!

  • Answer:

You have to buy Medicare Supplemental insurance through a private insurance company. Most of the major ones sell those policies. Or you can go to an independent insurance agent. Every state is a little different. What you have there I may not have here. There are different prices, different benefits for different supplemental plans but generally they run $125 to $175 a month depending on the variables. Part D is separately purchased. The Medicare website has a list of those drug plans for your state or region. If you choose Medicare Advantage plan which is similar to an HMO or PPO you get the Part D included and you dont need a supplemental policy.

Call a health insurance broker that does business in your state and they'll be able to get you pricing information. Plan F, for example, is generally the most widely available plan that has the richest benefits. And, every company that offers a Plan F is going to give you the same exact benefits. Part D is your drug coverage and those plans range from $15-$150/month.

Good for you, or good for me? Good in your state, or good in my state? You're NOT going to find something that pays 100% of the cost of everything, if that's what you're looking for. And what IS available, is going to vary WILDLY by what state you live in. You probably need to talk to a LOCAL (to you) health insurance broker. Most of them have a pretty good idea of which Medicare Supplemental plans are available in YOUR state.

You have two main types of policies; Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans. They are different animals and operate completely differently. Supplements come in Plans A through N. Plan F is the most comprehensive. The plans are exactly the same between companies. The different is premium, customer service, and how they do the premiums. NO Medicare Supplement has drug coverage. You can visit any Medicare doctor with any of these plans. The premiums can be high with these plans, and generally will go up as you get older. Advantage plans come in different flavors. HMO, HMO/POS, PPO, PFFS, SNP, MSA, Dual, Cost, and PACE plans. Which is best depends upon what is available in your state, and whatever you particular situation is. Many of these plans have drug coverage. Of those that don't, if it is an HMO, HMO/POS, or a PPO you cannot get separate drug coverage. The PFFS and MSA plans do allow you to get separate drug coverage. SNP, Dual and PACE plans all come with drug coverage. Cost plans allow you to keep an employer sponsored drug plan or get your own stand alone. There are doctor restrictions with these plans; what those restrictions are depends upon the plan type and get too involved to go into here. The premium is usually much less than a Supplement; many of these plans will have a $0 premium. The premium is the same no matter what your age. Drug plans, either stand alone or included in a Medicare Advantage plan, will vary widely between companies and between states. Coverage and cost will vary widely. They will vary between each year. Drugs are generally your highest expenses and your cost can vary by thousands of dollars. One example of the differences in cost: I have one client who is currently paying around $3300 for his drugs and drug premium this year. The next nearest competitor would have cost him $6500 for the year. The highest cost plan this year would have cost him $44,000. Big difference. Contact a local agent that works with all of the major companies in your area, and also works with both main types of plans. The agent can find the best plan for your situation and budget. There is no extra charge using an agent.

Hello, Choosing a good Medicare Supplement Insurance plan will depend on your specific needs and what you are able to afford. I would say that an average price across America for a Medicare Supplement Plan for someone turning 65 would cost you roughly $100 - $150 per month. Of course, this depends on many variables. Plans are priced according to your age, location, gender, and a few other details. I have found that you can go to http://www.medicaresupplementsolutions.com to compare instant price quotes directly online from multiple companies to really get the best deal. You can also learn about all the options available to you, and the site even has a page specifically for people turning 65. It is a good idea to compare price quotes, as all companies are required by law to offer the same plans and same coverage.
