Credit card question.

Question about an "accidental credit card".?

  • So, the other day I was shopping at an overly popular department store. When I went to the check out counter I was asked if I had a certain type of card. She never said the words "credit card", I suppose to make it seem more appealing. Anyways, I told her I wasn't sure, because I did have some sort of card from this store. However, I didn't have it with me. She asked for my ID so she could find out if I had this card. I was fine with letting her see that. She asked for my phone number and my SSN. After the SSN was asked for, I knew it was a red flag and was NOT a card that I had. So, after those few questions I clicked "cancel" on the screen where it was now asking me for my annual household income. However, she didn't stop clicking on her side of the computer. I had already said I did not want to continue, but she was clicking away. At the end she informed me I now have a credit card with them. I had NEVER given her permission to sign me up for ANY card. I was just allowing her to find out if I had ever had the card she asked me about in the first place. Well, by that time I was so frustrated and just wanted to leave so I grabbed the card information and headed home. When I got home I realized she never asked for my address. She had my DL so I figured she took it off of that. The problem is that my DL is from a different state. She should have had the common sense to ask me what my address is while she faked her way into getting me to sign up for a credit card. Well, I was calling the credit card company to ask if they could update my address. I was told that I'd have to drive that 30 minute drive there again to show an associate my DL to verify it was me and have THEM call the company to change my address. I did that. Well, when I get there I had to deal with a "not so friendly" manager and her "I'm better than you" attitude to tell me that I was the one that had to call. I informed her that I did call and that they told me an associate had to do this because the account was so new. Well, eventually an employee made the call for me, yet I find out the company won't even change it because I didn't have proof of my address. I was never told that I needed that. I was told I just needed to prove it was my identity. So, I got angry and left before I became one of those people who yell in stores and ruin innocent bystander's holiday cheer. I now have to wait 30 days to change my address on my own. Which means my actual "accidental" credit card is being sent to an address I don't live at! Now, I'm asking if what the first lady did to me was even legal? I didn't give her my permission to do any of that and hadn't even answered all of the questions and actually clicked "cancel" in the process. I feel like I was taken advantage of and now I have to deal with the effects of someone else's greed. Yeah, she gets TWO dollars for this application. Is two dollars really worth making someone else's day bad? Also, before anyone suggests me showing my address change: I can't yet. I just recently got married and am in the process of having my name changed. My rental agreement now has my new name and my credit card is using my maiden name. (Which I would've mentioned if she had even told me that she was doing this stupid application in the first place.) So, I have no proof that I live here due to my maiden name being used.

  • Answer:

Your social security number isn't even allowed to be on your driver's license anymore. So unless your license is from one of the states that used to use it as your driver's license number and you haven't had to renew in a long time, I'm not sure how they would even have it. Did you sign something? You have to sign a credit card application, either with a pen or electronically. Find the name of the company president and send him a letter. You can usually find this information online. I bet he would be interested to know that his employees are tricking customers to earn an extra $2 from the store and store managers aren't helping customers with their problems. Because none of this sounds legal.
