Kholes Credit Card Question?
-
I turned 18 a little under a month ago, and I'm hitting my budget for christmas. I don't get paid until the day AFTER christmas, and I obviously need my gifts before christmas lol. I still have to do some shopping for my mom, dad, and boyfriend. I have everything budgeted out, but I'm going to be cutting it close between my moms and boyfriends gifts. Which I really hate to do. My mom wants a 50$ sweater from Kholes, which I was going to get. But if I spend the 50$ cash I won't have enough for my boyfriends gift. Can I open a cash card account for the 50$ sweater and pay it off the day after christmas? I know its a money consumer and I'm certainly not looking to go into debt for long periods of time. I don't shop there a ton so I'm not worried about putting 100s of dollars on there I can't pay back. Can anyone tell me about their interest rates? Time limits to pay? Anything about the card? if I get the card, and keep it for just in case, but don''t use it will I still be charged?

Answer:
Since you just turned 18, you probably have no credit history. It is very unlikely that you will be approved for a credit card, even a store credit card. You will have to provide proof of sufficient income to qualify. Most credit cards want to see at least 6 months to a year of full time employment history. You can try to apply for a card, but don't be surprised if you are denied. If you charge something on a credit card and pay the balance in full by the statement due date, you will not be charged interest. You only pay interest if you carry balances from one month to the next. It is not a good idea to carry balances.

The only way to find out whether you'll qualify for a credit card is to go to Kohl's and ask them. They're not supposed to give you any credit if you're under 21 unless you can provide valid proof of income, but my impression is that, especially this time of year, they're not being too particular about the details. PLEASE pay off the entire balance IMMEDIATELY when you get your paycheck, and then put the card away and don't use it again.

If you are 18 and never had credit before, you most likely will NOT qualify for a "Kohls" card. They will do an inquiry on your credit, see you have no history and deny you. Do you have a full time job? Have you been at it for 6mos or more? I think you are mistaken when you think you would just walk in, apply and walk out with a $50 sweater on credit.
