Is this a good credit card to apply for?
-
I'm trying to find a credit card to use for graduate school applications which are pretty damn expensive these days (70-100 bucks depending on the school plus transcript and postage fees). I found this one on Citi's website https://creditcards.citi.com/credit-cards/citi-simplicity/. It offers 0% APR for 21 months on purchases and no annual fees. My plan is, if I get approved for this card, is to use it during the grad application process and then pay minimum payments until it's paid off. My only concern is interest payment. The APR for purchases says 0% and 21 months is basically 2 years of minimum payments for grad school apps. Does this mean that the card will not charge any interest for that time period? I've read all the small print but I found nothing that seems to stick out as a potential hazard.

Answer:
It should be fine. A couple things to look out for in the fine print is the activated APR. Often times with 0% APR deals they are only good as long as you pay you bill on time. If you miss a payment a set APR that is usually in the fine print will be activated and recalculate all your PRIOR balances as if you always had that interest rate. Also make sure the annual fee isn't activated after 21 months, you should never have a credit card with an annual fee.

Plan is great except for the minimum payment nonsense. You need to pay the entire debt off in 20 months. In the 21st month the rate will jump to 29%

Have you tried the financial aid office? Have you tried a student private loan? I would rather see these two other options. Why? With that card, you will have to make the minimum payment each month (of course) If you miss a payment or are even late one day - the 0% offer is no longer valid. The rate is likely to jump to 24% or higher Also note - that credit cards are revolving credit. (dangerous for credit scores) - any time you use more than 30% of your limit - the score starts reducing Coming close to maxing out a card can drop a score by 100 points Instalment loans can actually be good for credit. Is there any other way you can get a loan? A credit card is a horrible idea. They offer this 0% for a reason. They are snakes - they know what they are doing. You will get bitten
