I want to return an item back to the store, but realised that they didn't give me a receipt, what do I do?
-
I bought a calculator from Ryman Stationary (UK) yesterday, and now i want to return it cos I just read the manual and realised that it doesn't fit my specific needs. I checked in the bag for the receipt and realised the cashier woman didn't give me one (and no she didn't hand the receipt to me either). Now I wanna return or at least exchange my item but how can i do that if they didn't give me a receipt? Isn't it their own fault? Do they keep a record of all of their transactions so can they print one out or email me a receipt or something? How can I return my item if they didn't give me a receipt?

Answer:
If you know approximately when you made the purchase, it should be recorded on the shop's system, and they should be able to confirm that they did indeed sell the calculator at that time. Knowing the time and date will help prove your case. However, their returns policy might not permit you to return it just because it "doesn't fit your needs". You should read their returns policy before attempting to return it - they might require it to be not working to be allowed to be returned... most shops aren't that strict, though, thankfully. But you should still check, just in case.

In the UK at least 20% of customers purchasing small items simply don't pick up their receipt but leave it on the counter
If the calculator is one packed using Rymans own brand they would almost certainly exchange it but if it is a manufacturers brand such as Casio, Texas Instruments etc they may not as you could have bought it any where. Depends very much on the individual store manager. One thing you definitely will not get though is a refund, no receoipt no refund.
Ryman will almost certainly let you exchange it for other goods to the same value. Without a receipt, you won't get cash.
LOL you bought a calculator that did not fit your NEEDS? Calculators just calculate, if you wanted a scientific one or something special why did you not make sure it had those features before you paid for it? They don't cost much only £1 to £8 at the max! So we are not talking big money here. OK here's what you do, you put on your saddest face and go back to Ryman's to request that they take the calculator back because you did not get a receipt from the till. They will check it over to try and see if it was from their shop or not - if its a general make like CASIO which are sold by loads of retailers they might refuse you. If it's a make that they recognise they might take it back. It all depends on the manager on the day you take it back, if he/she is in a good mood, you will get your money back, if not the you are stuck with it. Next time make sure you get a receipt for everything you buy and treat it as a learning curve.
I don't know to much about the uk but in the US. Most stores can look up your purchase by your credit card/ debit card number. If you used that method of payment
if you know when you bought it then it should be in their systems if you paid by card, then your statement will show the amount and the date and that is proof of purchase Remember they are not obliged to give a refund,as it's not broken but they 'may' offer an exchange or a credit note
Tell them that.
If you have damaged the packaging (in order to examine) I dont think it will matter whether or not you have a receipt, its not likely they will take it back You bought it - it works - the fact that it dont do what you want it to do is your problem not theirs. You should have checked that it did before you bought it. If its got damaged packaging what do you expect them to do with it? Sell it as second hand? (It couln't be resold as new)
