How long does it take to become a CEO?

How would I become CEO of Asda for example. How much would I earn? How long would it take?

  • I could join Asdas graduate scheme after I have finished my PhD. I have a BA in Management with Marketing, MBA in Business and (soon) a PhD in Business. I want to jon Asdas Graduate Scheme under the Marketing part of the company. How long could it take to become COO, MD or CEO? Thanks UK only pleease

    With a lot of luck, hard work and determination, you could achieve that in 15 to 20 years. There are CEOs of companies the size of Asda (but not of WalMart it's parent co) in their early to mid forties. But apart from getting you into your first job, your PhD will probably not be that relevant as you progress. On a different tack, Asda is a well regarded professional development environment - research the retail industry in the UK and EU and you will find a surprising number of executives started their careers at Asda.

Many many years and with a 99.9% chance of never. If you think a PhD is a sure fire passport to becoming CEO of a large company you are going to have a very big shock ! It may never take you beyond department manager. The company i worked for before retirement last year had around 460 employee's, 16 of whom had a PhD, none of that 16 reached director level though all were in a supervisory role.

Many Many years as you would have to wait for any of the above to retire, and they do not always select from the ranks but choose outside candidates with a wide experience of business. Having a PhD does not give you experience. Working from the bottom up does. UK
