What happens when a car is written off?

How much would my car get if it happens to be written off?

• I have a 2004 sunfire. I was wondering if my car would get Totaled. My car got side swiped therefore the front passenger door is dented in and there are scrape marks on the back passenger door all the way to the gas tank. I heard that SGI is trying to get rid of all old cars so would my car be old enough to get Totaled. If so, would you possible know how much i would get for my car. If my car gets totaled it would be a pretty crappy deal if I was only able to purchase an uglier and older car in place of my smooth running 2004 sunfire.

They will Write Off an immaculate 1970's Chevy over a $600.00 fender bender. We own a pristine late model year 2006 Malibu Maxx and my wife hit a deer with it. Although there was no structural damage to the car (cosmetic only) SGI tried to have it written off. Fortunately, my friend, the body shop manager was able to get the repair price below SGI's arbitrary write-off limit for this car. No idea what SGI would pay out on a write-off but I can assure you it will not be enough to replace the car. They pay out wholesale value on cars. You will be lucky to get 60% of it's resale value.
