Why are sports exhausts and other mods a bad idea on stock engines and cars?
-
Im trying to explain to someone i know exactly why their amatueur attempts at modding their almost 10 year-old clio are not the way to go. Iv explained to them that bigger wheels destroy acceleration and cause havoc with the gearbox. The sports exhaust lets go of too much back pressure on the standard engine so you actually reduce the power (and that sports exhausts only are require once the engine is producing much more power and when the current exhaust starts to choke the engine emissions). Iv explained how these mods seriously reduce the resale value. And that considering its age what the engine really needs is a refurb, or deep service. ie taking it to bits, cleaning it, replacing overworn parts, and putting it back together obviously with fresh fluids etc. And of course that the car in question is not designed to run an extra 50bhp thinking of the chasis. Iv also mentioned that if you want do sort out an engine properly is to replace the main components internaly like spark plugs, pistons, crank, cams, etc teamed with some old school tuning. Not just to stick a turbo and air kit on a tired old engine coz youl end up the thing falling to peices. And cant forget the impact on insurance and reliability What im asking is to explain in detail why mods that people like this (17 year old boys) are not the way to go, like a second degree on it and maybe some extra persuasive points as well. Iv talked to various mechanics and mechanically minded people i know and they all say more or less the same thing cheers

Answer:
a wolf in sheep's clothing !!! keep mods for road use quiet as noise doesn't give power don't waste money on mods for that type of car . if you want performance then buy something worth doing eg . skyline 180sx ,golf gti .gti swift etc to have a car run on road with race set up is so un comfortable that you will sell it and wat a waste of money .if you wat to go fast do it on a race track speedway or drift track .more fun and no cops . if you think about it car manufacturers spend millions of dollars to get the most they can out of cars that idle smooth drive smooth and get as much power as is suitable for all driving conditions and to comply with environmental emission laws
