Reliable, affordable and fuel efficient first car for college student?
-
Next year I'm starting my first year of college, I'm a nearly 17 year old female, and considering I don't live in the city, finding a car to travel from home, to school, to work is very important. This will be my first car, so I don't need a new car or a relatively expensive car; simply something which I can afford: specifically up to 4k, reliable and fuel efficient would be nice as well (which I'm paying for myself, considering my parents aren't financially capable of helping me out). I've been interested in getting a Chrysler Pt Cruiser for a long time. It's a fairly cheap car, yet I've heard they seem to have multiple problems which is kind of dragging me away. I still have some time to figure this out, but I'd like to have my mind set and be aware of the finances I'll have with a car and school, etc... Thank you in advance!

Answer:
Do yourself a favor. Forget about style and what you "want" while you go to college. Get a car that you can depend on and will not let you down. Find a one owner Toyota Corolla being sold privately. Does it have a big dent in the side that brings its value down...(where, without the dent it would be worth 8,000 but now only 4,000 because of the visual uglies)...GREAT! Dents do not affect how it runs and that is what you need. Gas sipper, reliable. Do not be fooled by most car reporting magazines available. Most of those report on the first year or two of a cars life. You are looking more at year 7 or 8 or even...10! In this arena, a Corolla is a sure bet every time. Make sure you use synthetic oil and change it at least every 4,000 miles. The only issue they had was people neglecting the oil changes and then ruining the motors with oil deposits clogging the oil pumps.

PT, Forget the Cruiser, not a reliable automobile, period. Consider the following: Honda Civic Mazda Protege Ford Focus Regardless of which used cars you consider always look at their service records. That is how you can determine whether you are looking at a well maintained automobile (belts, hoses, brakes tires, timing belt, etc.) Also, it is worth finding the CARFAX report to make sure there are no past episodes of accidents or other mysteries.
