Is there a website that will calculate distance?

How do you calculate Freight Tonne-km or Tonne-mile for trips with several customers?

  • The simple defintion to calculate tonne-km is to multiply the distance traveled with the load being traveled. However, how do you calculate it for instance in the following example: You have one warehouse (WH) and two customers (C1 and C2). Customers 1 receives 70 tonnes and customer 2 receives 30 tonnes, and the trip is: WH --> C1 --> C2 --> WH, with distances: WH-->C1 = 16km, C1->C2 = 15km and C2-->WH = 12km There are 3 (or even more) ways to calculate, but which is the "right"-one: (16 x 70) + (15x30) = 1570 tkm or (16+15+12) x (70+30) = 4300 tkm? Or maybe even: (70+30)x16 + (30x15) = 2050? What is the "standard"-way to do this? If you know any transport related literature reference or website which clarifies this, it would be perfect! (it's for my BSc-thesis) Thanks

  • Answer:

the Tonne Km calculation in traditional soft waresare calculated at customer level. Which is: Customer 1 70 Tonnesx 16 kms Customer 2 30 Tonnesx (16+15) Idle Tonne Km Which serves as an indicator for under utilisation assuming max capacity to be 100 tonnes 100x ( 16+15+12) - (70x16)- (30x(16+15))
