Should neon lights be illegal?
-
I know the goverment's reasoning is that they're are distracting to other motorists...but I personally feel like they are not nearly as bad as the blue tinted headlights, that even when on dim are bright enough to blind, simply because underglow neon lights do not shine directly into your eyes. Maybe I feel this way only because I'm 17 and live in Virginia (a state where neon lighting is illegal), and can only use the neon lights under my car when I cross the North Carolina border. Also I feel that seeing an exotic sport car such as a Ferrari, or even cars like a Dodge Viper on the roadways is much more distracting than seeing a car go by with lights under it. Red and blue I can understand as being illegal due to emergency response vehicles utilizing the same colors. Not really a question...but more of a discussion, let me know your personal opinions!

Personally, I feel it's actually better to just restrict all of them than to allow all but 2 colors. The reason I have, is if people can use all the other colors legally, then what's to stop someone from sneaking in a blue or red? And with today's LEDs, you can have 156 colors in 1 tube, including 12 shades of blue and 8 shades of red. All it would take is the turn of a dial or a flip of a switch to turn it red or blue, then turn it white or something when in the presence of an officer. Also, different states have different laws. Some states you can't use them period on public roads. Some states, the bulbs cannot be directly visible from outside the car, and that includes neon lights inside the passenger area. Some states it's a primary offense and others it's a secondary offense, meaning they can't pull you over for it, but if you get pulled over for something else, like a headlight out or taillight out or speeding, they can cite you for it. So you can see, it's all a local issue.
Powerful lights at command is good, has to be used correctly. in cities one is to drive in dip headlights, and when it is not adhered is a nuisence to on coming traffick. Headlight glasses have a particular pattern which diercts the beam in a fashion that does not glare the on coming traffic. These are known as assymmetrical headlights. Tourists criss crossing countries with different traffic are supposed to mask the small pattern. This might be of some interest to you.
I think you will smirk when asked about this ten years from now. I was a tuner as a teen and into my mid twenties. I felt the same way for a short bit but neon and exhaust and other attention begging parts seem less and less appealing the more years go by.
